Spanish company Acciona Energía launches Blockchain project for renewable energy traceability.
The Greenchain project, which won an award for technological innovation in Spain, is tracing the energy generated by five wind and hydraulic installations located in the country.
The Spanish company ACCIONA Energía, with a presence in 65 countries, is developing a Blockchain project focused on the traceability of renewable electric energy. The Acciona project, called Greenchain, aims to provide its customers with the traceability of the renewable origin of their electricity generation. So it is possible to verify, anywhere in the world and in real time, that 100% of the electricity supplied is clean.
Currently, one of the greatest environmental concerns among citizens is energy sustainability. But, every time we turn on an electrical device, how can we know the origin of the electrons that make our appliances work? At the end of the day, they travel the same cables and are indistinguishable from those that come from non-renewable energy production systems.
The Greenchain project will allow users to check if the energy consumed is clean, by tracing the origin of the energy. In the first phases of this project, ACCIONA Energía is working in collaboration with the startup FlexiDAO, dedicated to the development of software tools for digital services. The association was held within the framework of the second edition of the open innovation program, I‘MNOVATTION de ACCIONA.
Between both companies have carried out a commercial demonstration that allows tracing the energy generated by five wind and hydraulic installations located in Spain (operators that in turn supply to four corporate clients in Portugal). For the test, the companies used the Blockchain platform, Energy Web Blockchain.
GreenChain took the medal.
The recent initiative of ACCIONA Energía won the medal in the twelfth edition of “Cinco Días Awards for Business Innovation”. GreenChain competed with 90 other projects and won the first prize for being the most innovative business project in the field of new technologies.
GreenChain truly transforms, understands electricity and measures its impact. It is an attractive proposal, designed by and for the user, who applies Blockchain technology to provide transparency. It’s also a project of great impact. “Miguel Jiménez, director of the Cinco Días award
In the past, the Spanish energy company has developed similar initiatives. Last year, ACCIONA launched the pioneering project called Store-Chain. The objective of the project was to use a Blockchain platform to trace the renewable origin of the energy stored in batteries installed in two generation plants in Spain.
Additionally, in the future, ACCIONA Energía plans to develop Blockchain solutions focused on the use of electric vehicle charging stations.
